SHARES of Bumi Armada Bhd are set to debut in choppy waters today but investors may well embrace the oil services group based on bullish prospects of the energy industry and its undemanding valuations. Bumi Armada set its initial public offer (IPO) price at RM3.03, some 4 per cent below its indicative price at the launch of the IPO. Research houses like MIDF and OSK have pegged their fair value at RM3.62 and RM3.65, respectively. “We think this valuation is fair given the groups sheer size as well as its capability in providing one-stop solutions, starting from oil and gas exploration up to the decommissioning stage. “The stock also deserves a premium over some of its peers given that more than 70 per cent of its business generates recurring income and a constant cash flow,” OSKs Jason Yap said in a report earlier this month. Bumi Armadas debut comes at a time when sentiment is rather weak. The broader market has lost about 2 per cent over the last two weeks, although the Main Index rebounded by half a per cent to 1,562.59 yesterday.

Research and Markets has announced the addition of the “New Business Opportunities in Asian Smart Grids” report to its offerings. In a release, Research and Markets noted that report highlights include: The development and expenditures on Smart Grid-related projects in Asia are already impressive. Nonetheless, even after massive power sector reforms, China, India and other Asian nations still face shortages in electric power. According to the US Energy Information Administration, the worlds electricity generation is projected to increase by 77 percent from 2006 to 2030. But the Asian countries will increase generation by 200 percent over that period. So the need for grid improvements is increasing. China has embarked on a 10-year project to build a Smart Grid that will catapult its power transmission into the digital age, securing electricity supplies and boosting energy conservation. The Government of India has devised a scheme which is called the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Program to address the strengthening and upgrading of the Indian transmission and distribution network. he program calls for an investment of US $10 billion over a five year span. The Japanese trade ministry has estimated the shift to renewable power will require a grid upgrade at a cost of between US $51 Billion and US $74 Billion by 2030. Korea aims to create a nationwide Smart Grid by 2030 for an electricity market worth US$ 60 Billion. Within Asia, the demand for Smart Grid capability is quite diverse in nature ranging from reflecting the sophisticated nature of electricity demand in developed nations such as Japan and South Korea, to the need for first deployment of grids and massive grid upgrades in the developing economies of India and China. Yet, there is also general consensus that existing electricity grids in Asia are not sufficient in terms of capacity, efficiency, reliability, security, and environmental impact to supply the electrical power needs of modern societies. Further, because of growing environmental concerns, Asian grids needs to become far more flexible than they are today, accommodating distributed power generation from renewable sources and use several energy-efficiency techniques. With all this in mind, NanoMarkets/Smart Grid Analysis believes that Asia, offers huge potential for suppliers of Smart Grids technology, systems and software. As a result, we are publishing this report which identifies and quantifies the business opportunities that are appearing as a result of the deployment of Smart Grids in Japan, Korea, India, Taiwan, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
PointRoll, a Gannett Company and a provider of digital marketing technology, released research on mobile advertising effectiveness revealing that consumers are using smart phones and tablets in very different ways, presenting an opportunity for advertisers to customize campaigns by device. “Were seeing that the more leisurely experience of tablets is driving higher time spent with the ad and engagement within the ads themselves, while ads on smart phones see less time spent, but higher activity and click rates as they tend to be more functional and action-oriented,” said Rob Gatto, CEO of PointRoll, in a release. “The biggest takeaway from this research is that each medium has inherently different consumer behavior patterns. Marketers have to be at each touch point and create an experience that capitalizes on each device within that medium.” Findings indicated that consumers tend to use iPhones for practical activities such as store locators, maps, and click to call, while iPad users participate in more leisurely activities like reading the news, watching a video and playing games. PointRolls mobile research analyzed interaction rates (frequency of user taking an action to interact with the ad), brand time and tap/click-through rates for both iPhones and iPads.

KUALA TERENGGANU: “Its easy to heap unkind words on our family but nobody has tried putting themselves in our shoes,” said Mak Yah, 50, the mother of medical assistant Mohd Ashraf Hafiz Abd Aziz, 25, the trans-gender whose application to change his name to Aleesha Farhana was rejected by the High Court here on Monday. Eyes brimming with tears, Mak Yah lamented to the New Straits Times the pain and humiliation she felt when she read the negative comments about her and her husband, Abdul Aziz, 60. “They accused us of being bad parents. It hurts to read such reports.” Although they had noticed Ashrafs effeminate tendencies since he was a toddler, Mak Yah said they were still horrified when they found out that their eldest son had undergone a sexual reassignment surgery in Thailand in 2009. “We were in Mecca performing the haj, and as far as we knew, our child was working in Putrajaya,” she said, adding that Ashraf had never mentioned about the medical tests and hormone level monitoring he had gone through at the Pantai Medical Centre for two years prior to the surgery.
Findmypast.co.uk, a family history website, has published the records of over half a million men who served in the British militia, the precursor to the UKs Territorial Army. According to a release, the Militia Attestation Papers, covering 1806 to 1915, were made available online to coincide with British Armed Forces Day on June 25. Debra Chatfield, marketing manager at findmypast.co.uk, said: “These records provide rich insight into our past and show how the everyday man, such as your local shopkeeper, found himself fighting for his country. In the absence of photographs, these records can help you imagine what your ancestors looked like, containing details which are largely unavailable elsewhere. Our easy to use website means you can unearth even more fascinating and detailed information about your ancestors at the click of a mouse.” The Militia Attestation Papers have been published in association with The National Archives and in partnership with FamilySearch. The records show that the soldiers who made up the militia during that period hailed not only from the UK itself, but also from around the world. Some recruits had been born in Italy, Ceylon, South Africa and even as far away as Australia and New Zealand. David Rencher, chief genealogy officer at FamilySearch, said: “The publication of the Militia Attestation Papers fills another critical gap in the family historians toolkit. The digitization and indexing of this rich collection will make it easy to find the regiment an ancestor served with and also when and where he was born. Family historians will quickly realize the value of this information, particularly when the record of an ancestors birth has been elusive or impossible to find elsewhere.”
Last November, in a Massachusetts town along the Vermont border, a young mother who had just given birth to her second child was turned out on the streets by her parents. The womans husband was a soldier serving in Afghanistan, and her parents did not approve of the war. “They just tossed her out, along with her two children and the Red Cross called us up and we found her a suitable place to live,” said Steven Jimmo, state chairman of The American Legions Family Support Network. STAFF at a Nottingham restaurant helped make two giant mosaics of Pippa Middleton – out of 15,000 crumpets. The team at The Boathouse Beefeater Grill in Castle Marina worked to piece together the artwork in tribute to the surprise star of the Royal Wedding, after she was named Britains number one choice to wake up with for breakfast in a poll of 2,000 people. More than 100 jars of butter, jam and Marmite were used to create shading on the 13m x 20m mosaic, designed and created by food artist Laura Hadland. In a feat that took more than 24 hours, a close-up of Pippas face as well as a recreation of the famous b a ck -side shot from the Royal Wedding were depicted. David Murdin, of Beefeater Grill said: “We wanted to do something to celebrate the launch of our new breakfast menu and thought it would be interesting to find out who the nation would most like to share their first meal of the day with. Its no surprise that someone as striking as Pippa has ranked as the countrys top bit of crumpet.”

They recently opened Nectar Skin Bar in Georgetown, which carries 35 brands of skin care products and offers an array of services from tanning to waxing to facials. Thomas started working on the Hill part time to make the dream a reality, but the transition, he says, hasnt been that tough. Research and Markets has announced the addition of the “Japan Real Estate Report Q3 2011″ report to its offerings. In a release, Research and Markets noted that report highlights include: Business Monitor Internationals Japan Real Estate Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, real estate associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Japans Real Estate industry. The earthquake and subsequent tsunami that ravaged Japans seaboard in March wreaked havoc on the real estate sector. New research claims that the damage from the Japanese earthquake has affected around US$700bn worth of insured property, according to the Wall Street Journal. The tsunami also hit areas with an estimated US$24bn-worth of insured property. This comes on top of existing structural problems in the sector, with the government under pressure to rein in its massive debt. These long-term problems led to an average land price decrease of 3 percent in 2010, following a drop of 4.6 percent the previous year. The improvement was due to recovering demand in the real estate market, which saw Japanese real estate investment trusts double their acquisitions during the year. This is likely to be reversed as investors hang back in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami – and subsequent slump in consumer and business confidence. Vacancy rates have already risen to 9.2 percent and 12.4 percent in Tokyo and Osaka respectively, from 9.1 percent and 11.9 percent in February. Hiring demand at regional offices outside Tokyo has also picked up since the earthquake.

Although the national healthcare reform debate remains a matter of dispute, state governments have begun to organize toward receiving the billions of dollars that the federal government will allocate. Funding is provided to states to expand healthcare coverage with systems such as Health Insurance Exchange (HIX). HIX creates a marketplace for potential buyers of health insurance to meet sellers and to be guided through the eligibility process with maximum efficiency and minimal interaction with case workers. The PPACA fosters efficiency by recommending business rules engines as a key component of HIX systems. The State of Wisconsin, considered exemplary for state governments nationwide for providing the best service for its citizens, noted that it has a reputation for selecting best-of- breed technology. Wisconsin received a grant as part of healthcare reform and, as one of the seven early adopters of HIX, chose Corticon through a rigorous selection process. Corticon best represented the type of agility that an HIX system requires, due to its patented “no-coding” technology and impact analysis features. “Corticon enables state government organizations to automate the rules, regulations, and best practices that govern benefits determination, needs assessment and service delivery,” said Dr. Mark Allen, CEO of Corticon. “Our rules engine is deployed in dozens of HHS solutions, empowering state business users, not just IT, to drive better, faster decisions.”

Smoke and mirrors on debt dispute What great political theater it is watching the debt-ceiling debate. Both sides follow their script: Republicans say no tax increases, while the Democrats say no cuts to entitlements. The sad fact is that it does not matter much anymore which party is in power, and whose agenda the government is following, since any fiscal restraint left Washington after the 2000 budget year. That was the last year the federal government reported a surplus. The Republicans controlled all branches of the federal government and grew spending from 2001 to 2008 by a staggering 33.2 percent during a period of relatively little inflation. The Democrats, effectively taking control in 2008, have grown spending, over the last three budget years, by an unbelievable 48.6 percent. In summary, since the last surplus in 2000, both political parties have increased spending by 88 percent, or about $1.8 trillion. To put this in perspective, the amount of growth just about equals what the federal government spent in 2001. So, back to the theater of the looming debt crisis, Republicans say they cannot increase the debt limit unless they get about $2 trillion in spending reductions over 10 years, about $200 billion a year, while the Democrats say they cannot increase the debt limit unless they get about $1 trillion in additional tax revenue over the next 10 years, or about $100 billion a year. The exact numbers are not that important because nothing they are discussing is going to have a major impact on the amount of money the federal government spends.

Four Knot: This mens tie is best worn for a button-down shirt and look good with wide neckties made from heavy fabrics. This tie style looks best on men who have a shorter neck because the knot is narrow and elongated. Pratt Knot: This tie knot was invented by Jerry Pratt and is also known as the Shelby Knot. This style has a drawback as the back has a narrow end which faces up, giving a stiff look. The Pratt knot does not look too wide or too narrow. The main advantage of this knot is that it can be worn with any shirt and on any occasion.
By Sudhin Thanawala In a strongly worded legal brief, the Obama administration has said the federal act that defines marriage as being between a man and a woman was motivated by hostility toward gay men and lesbians and is unconstitutional. The brief was filed Friday in federal court in San Francisco in support of a lesbian federal employees lawsuit claiming the government wrongly denied health coverage to her same-sex spouse.
Its a grey and drizzly day in North Londons Crouch End, where a derelict town hall marks the location of new BBC2 drama The Hour. Unremarkable as the building is from the outside, its interior proves a treasure trove of period detail, unlocking a door to the past. To 1956, to be precise, where the cast are milling about in 50s finery – men donning dark suits and Brylcreemed hair, women in fitted skirts and high heels – and adding an air of magic to proceedings. The Hour is an homage to the topical news shows of the 50s and at the centre of the action is a newsroom at the BBCs Lime Grove studios, painstakingly replicated from the era and dominated by a 10ft high image of actor Dominic West. “It was deeply shocking walking on set and seeing this enormous picture of me. My wife will be rolling in the aisles,” says West, who plays Hector Madden, the charismatic frontman of topical news programme The Hour.

Some day, maybe soon, or relatively soon, the NFL will resume business. This isnt just wishful thinking, its a realistic fact of finance: If the league has to erase just one set of preseason games it could cost the owners something in the neighborhood of $200 million. Even though the moguls may be on the verge of despising their own players, money still talks and in the NFL it howls. Someone is going to pay for aggravating the owners and its likely to be some of the head coaches who will enter whatever sort of season develops carrying the baggage of less-than-satisfactory won-lost records. Woe be to those half dozen or so coaches whose teams do not show some sort of improvement in the first two months of whatever season there will be. The most likely to be singed by his hot seat is Tony Sparano of Miami. Hes a good coach who performed a football miracle three years ago when he took the 2008 Dolphins, who had a 1-15 record the season before, and converted them into an 11-5 playoff team.

KUALA LUMPUR: The US is unlikely to print fresh money under a third round of quantitative easing (QE3) because it risks feeding rising consumer prices, but Asias capital markets may benefit if it does happen. The Fed, which is the US central bank, launched quantitative easing in 2009, pumping US$1.7 trillion (RM5.1 trillion) to boost liquidity in the financial system and tackle deflationary risks. QE2, involving some US$600 billion (RM1.8 trillion), was concluded last month and it was expected to generate about 30,000 new jobs per month, or about 700,000, over two years. Standard Chartered Banks chief investment strategist, Steve Brice, said the bar is high for QE3, but there are risks following the latest jobs report. “Any signal of a permanent slowdown would likely trigger further policy action from the FOMC (Fed Open Market Committee), but in our view, this would require two quarters of sub 1.5 per cent growth, with weakening core inflation and little progress in reducing the slack in the labour market.”

Clear Channel Airports and McConnell Communications have been selected to partner with Wayne County Airport Authority to create a dynamic Community Showcase Program to be featured throughout Detroit Metropolitan Airport. According to a release, the Wayne County Airport Authority Board approved the six-year award, with a four-year renewal option, at its meeting in May. The contract allows the two firms to market advertising opportunities on behalf of the Wayne County Airport Authority at the McNamara and North terminals. The advertising program, created by CCA, will offer local and regional businesses the opportunity to reach the 30-plus million passengers who utilize the airport annually. Highlights include the installation of new technologies, such as kiosks that will replace old phone boards found in both the McNamara and North Terminals, which will provide information to connect with area hotels, restaurants, transportation and events. Former Rep. Jack F. Quinn, now the president of Erie Community College, returned Friday to the House of Representatives, where he had served for 12 years, to impart some lessons on a topic on which he has become an expert: getting military veterans an education in the civilian world. About 1,000 of ECCs 20,000 students are veterans, Quinn noted in testimony before the House Veterans Affairs Committee where he once served. “We can put vets on the job and get them working,” Quinn said. ECC has worked hard to deal with the hurdles facing those moving from the highly structured military environment to the free-form life of college, he said. Veterans Clubs have been established on all three ECC campuses, and all the college services that vets need, from financial aid to transitional housing, are streamlined through those clubs to minimize hassles for soldiers-turned-students.

Croft, the Glamorgan and England all-rounder, has been a big friend to Carmarthen Town AFC. Tribute was paid to Croft by celebrated Welsh actor Dafydd Hywel, a Carmarthen Town and Glamorgan cricket fan, and a special presentation of a framed photo montage was made by club president Jeff Thomas. Other speakers at the dinner included Dylan Ebenezer, presenter of the popular S4C Sgorio programme.
For more than a quarter of a century, Dr. Howard Dodson has been at the helm of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. That long association was vividly invoked Monday evening at Aaron Davis Hall. Having the Schomburgs extensive resources at their disposal, director George Faison and writer Khephra Burns turned this 85th anniversary celebration and salute to the departing Dodson into a veritable cavalcade of Black history, using a triptych of screens showing a montage of photos and film footage as an ever-changing backdrop for narrators, dancers and a magnificent choir. “Wow,” was the response of Elaine Mathis, Dodsons sister, to the spectacular evening. And that exclamation could have been applied to each segment of the event, from the welcoming musical trio, featuring drummer Warren Smith, to the VIP reception and to the succulent salmon at the dinner. Moderator Avery Brooks set the tone with a reading from Henry Dumas “Play Ebony,” his resonant voice intoning, “Dip into the river your ebony cups.” Faison and Burns dipped deeply, immersing themselves and the audience in a beguiling, overwhelming parade of Black culture. There were brief images flashed from Tom Feelings book “The Middle Passage,” which recounts the brutal trip from Africa across the Atlantic during the slave trade. The plantation and Jim Crow period were masterfully wrought and complemented by the concert choir from the Cicely Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts, under the direction of Norma Jean Hughes. The harmony during the rendition of the Black National Anthem matched the poignancy of the poetic words.

Mobile advertising and mobile money services are making strong inroads among Chinas newly affluent classes, according to a new consumer survey from ABI Research. The online survey of 1,000 Chinese consumers was conducted in March-April 2011. (Note that given the online nature of the survey, the sample cohort is entirely drawn from the technology-enabled part of the Chinese population.) According to practice director Neil Strother, “Respondents were asked to indicate what actions they had taken as a result of clicking on an ad displayed on their mobile phones over the previous three months. Nearly half (49 percent) had received a coupon, while 46 percent had investigated the product or service and 45 percent had signed up to receive text alerts. These were the most common responses.” As result of these responses, at least a quarter of respondents had also visited a local business (44 percent), downloaded or purchased some content (44 percent), signed up for an email newsletter (39 percent), or made a purchase (25 percent). Strother said, “These survey results highlight that commercialization of the mobile Internet through advertising is fairly strong in China. There may be a different kind of openness to advertising at work here. Its possible that newly-affluent Chinese consumers are more receptive to advertising than some of their — often jaded — western counterparts whose cultures have been saturated with ads for many generations.”
